Just when I thought I was missing first rains in Bombay
the desert decided to give me a break and the rain came pouring down
taking "the last signs"advice we headed out for a long drive past the shore road
it was lovely, I spent the entire drive with my face plastered to the glass
watching lightining streak across the sky
as the rain let up we stopped off at this charming fruit store for lebanese fruit
we were greeted by a gorgeous specimen of the male species
straining out of his white t-shirt, he was mopping a puddle by the door
when I stepped in complete with blow dry and red wedge
do you have any clementines I said
as dad headed for the cherries and mom the brocoli
he stared expressionless
now I know arabs well enough to recognize when i'm drawing a blank
but he had said hello
so this was certainly not a language thing
clementines I said again, younnoh tiny orange things
yes yes clementines he said finally after an extended pause
not now he said
not now? as in? not now on the shelf
not in season piped up dad
ahhhh I said
shaking my head
I love clementines
sorry he said shaking his head, looking like he was offering condolence
weird I said in my head and followed mum towards the back of the store
weird hottie went behind the counter
this store was intriguing it had all these enticing jars, stone and glass
rustic and exciting, it reminded me of the mistress of spices store
what's this I asked pointing to a cool looking jar
weird one said nothing, its a pickle said his partner after an eternity and shot him what can only be interpreted as an annoyed glance...dad placed the fruit trays on the counter
what's this? and this? and this?
(I was like a kid in a candy store..i do love interesting jars)
weird one looked kinda helplessly around
he watched me closely as he rung up our purchases
I spotted a coffee machine
oh can i have a cup of coffee too please, I said
er...er...stuttered weird boy
is your machine working I said the impatience showing in my voice
I don't think they're sellign coffee said dad
yes..he said nervously, no? I said?
capuchino he said finally
yes one capuchino is fine I said (I was very puzzled by his behaviour)
ahmed, wahid capuchino, he called out to the partner who was now obscured by the machine
' tea"he said
no" i said "coffee"
latte he said?
no! cappuchino, I said
he means do your parents want anythign
said ahmed (the partner)
the impatience in HIS voice clearly showed
oh no no I said nothing just the capuchino
an american who had walked in raised his eyebrow
how much asked dad finally,
ten kd he said
with the brocoli? asked dad
mum had added it a little late
yes he replied
and the coffee? asked dad
yes, no,
what? said dad
long pause...
coffee is free he said looking sheepishly at me
dad handed him a ten kd note, he kept looking at me
I flashed him my smile, and said thank you
he smiled back opened the register and handed dad a ten kd note
dad took it put it in his purse and pasued
looked at him and said did I give you a 20 or a 10?
weird one stared stupidly from dad to me
I saw a flash of green I said
I dunno don't ask me I said returning to the jars
twenty he said retuning the note back to dad
dad held it out still hesitating to out it in
no i think i just gave you ten said dad
Oh gawd! I said rolling my eyes
20 he insisted
dad shrugged his shoulders helplessly
look you gave us free coffee now you wnat to give us free fruit!! said an exasperated dad
he opened the register again, froze and flushed bright pink
the american stiffled a chuckle and ducked behind the bread
he shot me a glance and took the ten from dad
sorry he muttered
i thought I heard his partner groan
i took the coffee cup from him
thanks again i said my voice dripping with honey, as I walked out of the store
even before we reached the car dad began, CHRIS! he said annoyed'
what?!! I said what did I do
oh you know exactly what you did he said, drving off
he turned to mum, did you see what she did to that poor boy
poor boy! my ass
"hey I can't help it if he's never talked to a girl before" i said out loud
please chris, said dad, he talks to a lot of girls you think you're the first girl to buy fruit here?
well she's the first one to get free coffee, said mum
my mother is a wise woman
I tossed my blow dried hiar and nursed my free coffee
here's a pic

free coffee does taste sooooooooo good
